PLACE:
The beautiful town of El Verger is close to the beautiful beaches of Oliva Nova and Dénia. There are also 5 golf courses around, a horse riding center, a protected national park of Marjal de Pego and it is 15km from Dénià (a gastronomic city in UNESCO since 2015). Denia is located in a bay at the foot of the imposing Montgó mountain range. In the very center of the bay is, surrounded by palm trees, the port of Denia. Despite its importance, it has preserved the atmosphere of a typical Mediterranean fishing port. From here you can take ferries to the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca, which can be reached in about three and a half hours. Situated on a hill above the port is the impressive medieval fortress "El Castillo", built in the 11th and 12th centuries and later enlarged. From the castle towers you have a magnificent view of the coastline, and especially during the summer season concerts are frequently held in the castle. On the same hill there was already an old Roman settlement, "Diannium", and the remains of fortifications and houses that have been found can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of the castle. Other exhibits are from the ancient Iberian and Moorish periods. Surrounded is "El Castillo" of the old town of Denia, with narrow and picturesque streets of Moorish origin. Numerous beautiful buildings from the modernist era attest that Denia achieved great importance as a commercial center, especially at the end of the 19th century. Also thanks to its toy industry, Denia achieved prosperity, in the Toy Museum particularly beautiful exhibits are exhibited. Near the port is the "Baix la Mar" neighborhood with traditional fishermen's houses and picturesque squares and alleys. Here you can enjoy the excellent seafood from Denia, well known are the "Gambas Rojas" (red prawns). Another specialty is the sweet wine "Mistela", which is drunk as an aperitif or dessert. Denia has 16 kilometers of fine sand beaches that were awarded the EU Blue Flag, in the North "Area de Les Marines" and in the South "Marineta Casiana". Following the latter is a rocky area that is very popular with divers for its rich underwater world.
